Resumen

La infección del tracto urinario es una de la infecciones bacterianas más comunes en la población femenina adulta. Afecta entre 1 a 2 de 10 mujeres durante su vida y constituye un importante problema sanitario. La infección urinaria en la mujer postmenopáusica reúne características propias que la diferencian de la mujer premenopáusica. El déficit hormonal que ocurre durante la postmenopausia conlleva cambios funcionales en el ecosistema vaginal que conducen a una colonización bacteriana hacia el tracto urinario. Su alta prevalencia, la variación en la sensibilidad de los microorganismos responsables y las nuevas modalidades terapéuticas obligan a actualizar el conocimiento en este tema. El objetivo de este artículo es abordar ciertos puntos de interés en el diagnóstico y tratamiento de las infecciones del tracto urinario en la postmenopausia.

Abstract

Urinary tract infection is one of the most common bacterial infections in the adult female population. It affects 1 to 2 of 10 women during their lifetime and is a major health problem. Urinary tract infection in postmenopausal women has its own characteristics and differ from premenopausal women. The hormonal deficit that occurs during postmenopause leads to functional changes in the vaginal ecosystem leading to bacterial colonization into the urinary tract. Its high prevalence, the variation in the sensitivity of the responsible microorganisms and the new therapeutic modalities oblige to approach this subject and to update knowledge. The objective of this article is to address certain points of interest in the diagnosis and treatment of urinary tract infections in postmenopause.
